"The Art of Digital Fabrication: STEAM Projects for the Makerspace and Art Studio"

What is the value of digital fabrication and how can you keep focused on what makes art making a place for rich material exploration?

Digital fabrication in art allows for creative expansion and precision in execution. It blends technology and artistry, enabling intricate designs to be created efficiently. Rich material exploration could be achieved when students create artwork that requires knowledge of materials regardless they are digital like digital brush texture or real like Lego pieces.

In contemplating Maeda’s three types of design, is there one that you identify with the most? Why do you think that the author states that you must embrace at least two of these design approaches to win in this century?

Maeda introduced three types of design including "classical design", "design thinking", and "computational design". I identify with "design thinking" the most because I love innovation and I am constantly creating new innovative lessons for my students. Design thinking includes 6 steps:

Frame a Question—Identify a driving question that inspires others to search for creative solutions.

Gather Inspiration—Inspire new thinking by discovering what people really need.

Generate Ideas—Push past obvious solutions to get to breakthrough ideas.

Make Ideas Tangible—Build rough prototypes to learn how to make ideas better.

Test to Learn—Refine ideas by gathering feedback and experimenting forward.

Share the Story—Craft a human story to inspire others toward action.

"Stories of Online Art Education: Transitions and Challenges During the Pandemic"

List the various methods and/or approaches that were helpful to these educators in creating a positive online experience in their art education classes.

  • Backward design thinking & lesson modification.

  • Accept various file types for the assignments.

  • Provided download packets.

  • Allow students to use any available devices to support various levels of class content.

  • Creating an online community by organizing small-group discussions and guided peer reviews to facilitate student collaboration.

  • Conduct weekly Zoom studio sessions where students could collaborate to make art, and discuss lesson ideas.

  • Sharing Emotion Strategies: using discussion boards, online office hours, and individual meetings.

  • Emerging technologies such as augmented reality (real-world content overlaid with digital information), virtual reality (a stimulated place in a digital, artificial environment), and mixed reality (real and virtual content intertwined).
